E-PAN: How To Apply For Virtual Card, Check PAN Status

New Delhi: PAN card is one of the most important identity, financial documents in the country. PAN is not only an identity proof but an important document for financial transactions and for filing income tax returns. In order to make PAN application easier for people, instant PAN allotment through Aadhaar facility was launched formally this year.

Now, people can apply for instant PAN using Aadhaar-based e-KYC. The facility is now available for all those Permanent Account Number (PAN) applicants who possess a valid Aadhaar number and have a mobile number registered in the UIDAI database. Now, one can also have an electronic PAN card called e-PAN as it is a valid proof of PAN.

e-PAN has a QR code that possesses demographic details of PAN cardholders such as the person’s name, date of birth and photograph. These details are accessible through a QR code reader and are duly recognised. The allotment process of e-PAN is paperless and it is issued to the applicants free of cost.

How to apply for instant PAN through Aadhaar based e-KYC:

  • Visit the e-Filing website of the Income-tax Department. (Url: www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in)
  • Click the link- ‘Instant PAN through Aadhaar’.
  • Click the link- ‘Get New PAN’.
  • Fill in your Aadhaar in the space provided, enter the captcha and confirm.
  • The applicant will receive an OTP on the registered Aadhaar mobile number; submit this OTP in the text box on the webpage.
  • After submission, an acknowledgement number will be generated. Keep this acknowledgement number for future reference.
    On successful completion, a message will be sent to the applicant’s registered mobile number and e-mail id (if registered in UIDAI & authenticated by OTP). This message specifies the acknowledgement number.

How to check PAN card status:

  • Go to the e-Filing website of the Income-tax Department. (Url: https://www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in)
  • Click the link- ‘Instant PAN through Aadhaar’ and click the link- ‘Check Status of PAN’.
  • Submit the Aadhaar number in the space provided, then submit the OTP sent to the Aadhaar registered mobile number.
  • Check the status of the application- whether PAN is allotted or not.

How to download PAN?

  • To download PAN, please go to the e-Filing website of the Income-tax Department.
  • Click the link- ‘Instant PAN through Aadhaar’.
  • Click the link- ‘Check Status of PAN’.
  • Submit the Aadhaar number in the space provided, then submit the OTP sent to the Aadhaar registered mobile number.
  • Check the status of application- whether PAN is allotted or not.
  • If PAN is allotted, click on the download link to get a copy of the e-PAN pdf.

It is worth mentioning that e-PAN is a free facility for PAN applicants. This facility is available only for PAN applications submitted to NSDL e-Gov where PAN is allotted or changes are confirmed by ITD in last 30 days or e-PAN download requests submitted to NSDL e-Gov through paid facility in last 30 days. Using this facility, e-PAN XML can also be downloaded.
