Facebook may soon get a new look and name, know why
You may soon find your popular social media platform Facebook in a new look and feel with a completely new name. The company is planning to rebrand itself with a new name next week to reflect its focus on building the metaverse, an international media reported on Tuesday.
A metaverse refers to shared virtual world environments, which people can access via the internet.
As per reports, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg will reveal his plans at the company’s annual Connect conference on October 28. However, it is expected that the look and name change could be revealed earlier. The prospective change signal the tech giant’s ambition to be known for more than social media platform.
The rebrand would likely position the blue Facebook app as one of many products under a parent company overseeing groups like Instagram, WhatsApp, Oculus, and more.
What does the change mean?
More than 10,000 Facebook employees are building consumer hardware like AR glasses that will eventually be omnipresent.
The transition of Facebook will be from being a primarily social media company to being a metaverse company.
A rebrand could also serve to further separate the futuristic work Mark Zuckerberg is focused on, a media was quoted as saying.
Facebook isn’t the first well-known tech company to change its name as its ambitions expand. Google did the same in 2015.
Google reorganised entirely under a holding company called Alphabet, partly to signal that it was no longer just a search engine.
Facebook has been steadily laying the groundwork for a greater focus on the next generation of technology.
The new Facebook company name is a closely-guarded secret and not known widely even among its senior employees.
