Government warns against new online banking scam that can fool customers in minutes
“Dear XXX customer, you recently added a nominee to your account named XXXXX. You will be able to send funds to this nominee after 30 mins”. If you have received a similar message on your mobile, then beware. This is a spoof and a trick to defraud you.
In a post on Twitter, Cyber Dost is warning against such fraudulent messages and is asking citizens to avoid clicking any links in such messages.
Cyber Dost is the cyber safety and cyber security handle maintained by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India.
The post has an image with a SMS text that reads “Online Banking Alert….Dear XXX customer, you recently added a nominee to your account named XXXXX. You will be able to send funds to this nominee after 30 mins”.
This is followed by a warning message that says “ If you did not make this change, please Log in to your online banking and follow the on screen instructions”.
But the customers are warned to verify the transaction with their respective banks before clicking on the link shared in the message.
In the tweet, Cyber Dost says that the message could be a cyber trick to cheat gullible citizens and steal personal data from them. The scam can also lead to loss of money in some cases.
