Here’s how you can link your PAN and Aadhaar card in minutes
New Delhi: The Supreme Court recently upheld the constitutional validity of Aadhaar and also said it is mandatory, under Section 139AA of the Income Tax Act, to link permanent account number (PAN) with Aadhaar.
With the fog around the whole Aadhaar linking issue clear, users now have to mandatorily link it with PAN for the purpose of filing income tax. Not only will a person have to link PAN to file income tax but he/she must possess an Aadhaar for making a PAN card.
It may be noted that the income tax department is likely to declare unlinked PAN cards as void after March 31, 2019. Data obtained indicated that there are millions of PAN holders that are currently not linked with Aadhaar, reported news agency PTI.
In view of the situation, users who have not linked their PAN with Aadhaar should do it immediately to avoid any trouble in 2019 and here are the steps required:
For non-registered users
• First, a user has to go to www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in and click on the “Link Aadhaar” tab on the left side. Worth mentioning that there is no need to login or register to complete the process.
• Once you are on the page (form format), you have to fill in PAN and Aadhaar number and enter your name as mentioned on the Aadhaar card. Once done, you should check all the details accurately again and click on submit after entering the captcha code.
• The linking will later be confirmed by the Unique Identifiation Authority of India (UIDAI).
For registered users
In case you are a registered user on the income tax e-filing portal, there are that your PAN is already linked with Aadhaar. You can check if your Aadhaar details are linked to PAN by visiting the income tax e-filing website www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in.
You can normally log in to with your PAN ID, password and date of birth. Once you are logged in, click on the profile tab settings and select the “Link Aadhaar” option.
In case your Aadhaar details are linked to PAN, you will get a notification showing that it is already linked. However, you will get the same form as a non-registered user if your PAN is not linked to Aadhaar.
SMS: You can also link your Aadhaar with PAN card using other methods including one where you have to send an SMS to PAN service providers. This step needs to be followed by those who are not able to link Aadhaar on the e-filing website.
Individuals can either send a SMS to NSDL e-Governance Infrastructure Limited or UTI Infrastructure Technology and Services (UTIITL).
In the SMS, you have to write UIDPAN (SPACE) 12-digit Aadhaar (Space) 10-digit PAN.
It may be noted NDSL and UTI will not charge you for the transactions but your mobile operator may charge you for the same.
The most basic method to link PAN with Aadhaar card is through a form, which was introduced by the CBDT to ease problems for taxpayers who are not technologically equipped. The process can not only be followed to get a new PAN card but also to rectify any mismatch in details.
It may be noted that unlike online modes of linking PAN with Aadhaar, this service is not free. A fee will be charged by the PAN service provider on the basis of whether it concerns linking or correction in PAN or Aadhaar details. Any correction in PAN details, the amount to be paid is Rs 110 and any correction in Aadhaar details will require Rs 25.
