How to cancel or deactivate your PAN card
When a person wishes to cancel any additional PAN cards in their name, he/she first must get a PAN card cancellation form. This form is the same that a person fills while applying for a new PAN card or while making some correction in the existing PAN card. A person can get this form online as well as offline.

Thus, the individual has to click on the ‘Apply for PAN Online’ option. After this, the applicant is redirected to a new page where he/she has to fill his/her details as asked. Online cancellation of the pan card
- A person should visit the official website of the income tax department -http://incometax.sparshindia.com/pan/newPAN.asp and fill in the required details after reading the instructions.
- Apart from this, you can fill the ‘PAN Change Request’ application form. The current PAN has to be mentioned on the top of the form. The extra PANs should be mentioned in column number 11 while the PAN card that has to be cancelled should be submitted along with the form.
Offline cancellation of the pan card
- A person should fill form 49A for making any correction in his or her PAN card. Form number 49A has to be submitted at the NSDL TIN facilitation center.
- Also, you can write a letter to the assessing officer of the concerned jurisdiction and write all the details as listed below:
Address of the assessee
Name of the assessee
Details of additional PAN card that has to be given
Specific details of the PAN card that you wish to keep
It is important for the assessee to have an acknowledgement copy of the letter. The acknowledge letter from the income tax department as a proof that the additional PAN has been cancelled.
