Now get fuel delivered to your doorstep; all you need to know

For an energy guzzling country like India, different types of fuel powers the economy. From the petrol used in cars, to the diesel used in a water pump in an agriculture field, fuel powers much of our activity. There is, however, an issue. Every time you need fuel, you need to make trips to the nearest fuel pump. In an on-demand world where everything can be delivered to your doorstep, the conventional way of getting fuel seems to be an anomaly.

The solution: Kolkata-based Neogi Technologies and Research Private Limited is an enterprise that manufactures mobile fuel dispensing units enabling door-to-door delivery of diesel, kerosene, bio-diesel, lubricating oil, etc.

Founded by Dhrupabada Neogi in 1971, the then 35-year-old’s namesake company began its journey by selling import substitute spares. Gradually over time, he started repairing, servicing and complete overhauling of petrol pumps and its sub-assemblies for major oil companies. This was followed by Neogi starting to modify and fabricate various sub-assemblies and equipments of petrol pumps and thus developed the mobile fuel dispensing unit.

“Neogi Technologies’ primary focus has always been to solve problems of individual customers. It means the solution may not be the same for all customers and it needs to address individual customer requirements. This means to execute diverse solution as required in mass customisation,” said CEO Samir Neogi.

Diesel on the way
The High Accuracy Fuel Metering and Dispensing System (HAFMDS) developed by Neogi is in sync with the government’s objective of delivering fuel at the door step. The move is expected to have a substantial impact on the conservation of national resources by avoiding unnecessary travel of vehicles to a refueling pump and waiting there in a queue, which burns precious fuel and causes pollution.

Currently a number of startups and even oil companies like IOC and HPCL are carrying our mobile fuel delivery on pilot projects across India, what makes Neogi Technologies’ flagship product different is the fact that it is versatile and can be used to deliver a range of fuel and not limited to petrol and diesel. The dispensing unit models range from mobile diesel pump for door-to-door delivery, dispensing and metering of edible oil, mobile dispensing systems for re-fuelling earthmovers in mines and construction sites, liquid measuring systems, dispensing and metering of non-corrosive liquid at chemical plants, etc,.

The unit is capable of delivering a variety of fuels such as diesel, kerosene, bio-diesel, lubricating oil, furnace oil and light diesel oil. “It is highly accurate dispensing unit, prevents wastage completely and can be operated by the engine of the truck or by its battery power,” said Neogi. The mobile dispensing units can be used to deliver fuel at mines, road constructions, truck terminals, river and sea ports, among others.

The unit comprises of certain special parts which prevents the waste of fuels and help in working in an environment-friendly manner. These include a pressure vacuum valve which reduces evaporation losses and is also an important safety item in petrol pumps to avoid fire hazards. Another one is the shear valve which prevents spillage of fuel in case of accidental ramming of the dispenser by activating poppets that shut off the flow of fuel.

“India is a vast agro-based country with a diverse geographical region, which are not fully serviced for their fuel management needs like diesel for pumps, tractors, power tillers etc. Also, there are a large number of country boats in inland waters & rivers for which diesel is required at the locations. Thus, we believe there’s a huge opportunity for these mobile fuel dispensing units in the country,” he said.

Hectonic India Retail, a firm which offers a variety of products in the fuelling/refuelling market segment, has been buying products from Neogi Technologies for nearly a decade. Its MD Hemant Dahale said, “It has been a great experience working with Neogi Technologies. The firm is a brilliant example of the Make in India initiative and promotes environment-friendly products. It has also supported local manufactures and has generated many jobs for the locals. Their product quality is good and so is their customer support.”

Plastic-solid petrol
Apart from the business of the fuel dispensing units, the firm is engaged in another environment-friendly process of converting waste into fuel. Around six years ago, when Neogi realised that plastic contains hydrocarbons and is practically a solid form of petroleum, the idea of converting it into a fuel shaped up.

However, it wasn’t as easy as it sounds. “To make the fuel, we had to convert the plastic into liquid form which requires heating the plastic. And, if we directly heat the plastic, it will roast and emit harmful gases, which are extremely bad for the environment,” Neogi said.

Therefore, to prevent the plastic to get roasted, the firm uses additives which help the plastic melt and take the gaseous form. This is followed by the condensation or a cooling system process that converts the gas into liquid form.

“The by-product fuel has a calorific value of 10120 and can be used as an aerosol in generators,” he said, adding that it is currently not for sale, but the firm is in the process of making a commercial use of it. Business is brisk for the firm, which has been able to generate its own fund over a period of time, claims to have grown at a CAGR of over 25% and has a market share of about 15%. It did business of Rs 12.62 crore in FY 2018-19 and is now looking to generate Rs 16.40 crore this fiscal.
