This Apple Watch feature may help you fight coronavirus

If there is one common thing that has been adopted by everyone across the world — more so in the last few months — it is proper hand washing. This hygienic habit has become an integral part of people’s lives and almost everyone knows that it is recommended to wash hands for at least 20 seconds. Apple Watch, being the company’s offering for everything related to health and fitness, will soon get a new feature for this purpose.

At its first ever virtual World Wide Developer Conference, Apple announced that it will roll out a new feature as part of its next watchOS update — watchOS 7 — that will help users in washing hands properly.

watchOS 7 comes with an automatic hand washing detection feature that will start a countdown of 20 seconds when the Apple Watch Series will detect a user is washing their hands. It will detect this using Apple Watch’s motion sensors, microphone, and on-device machine learning and start the 20-second countdown timer automatically.

Thanks to this feature, if a user finishes their hand washing early, the Apple Watch will prompt them to keep washing their hands. Not only that, the Apple Watch will also soon remind users to wash their hands when they reach home.

Apple also said that the Health app on iPhone will keep a record of the frequency and duration of the user’s hand washing. Also, they will be able to see all the information on the importance of hand washing.

The automatic hand washing detection feature will come with the WatchOS 7, which will be rolled out as part of public beta next month, however, it is already available to Apple Developer Program members starting today.

The official rollout of the WatchOS 7 is scheduled to happen in the coming months of 2020 and will be available for Apple Watch Series 3, Apple Watch Series 4, or Apple Watch Series 5 paired with iPhone 6s or later running iOS 14 or later.
